How in-cab safety tech can improve trucking operations

This article is based on “Safety in Relay: The role of in-cab technology”, the RelayCon 2025 yard talk by Farukh Rashid from Motive.

In-cab safety technology can not only help carriers reduce accidents, but also operate more efficiently, lower costs, and ultimately build stronger, safer businesses.

What is in-cab safety tech?

In-cab safety tech is much more than just a camera on a windshield. It’s a system of tools working together to help drivers get home safe every day.

  • AI dash cams: Dash cameras (front- or dual-facing) that detect unsafe driving behaviors, helping prompt drivers to self‑correct in real time, and record HD video to help coach drivers post-trip.
  • Electronic logging devices (ELDs): A device that monitors the drive time and hours of service (HOS) compliance to allow for accurate/automatic recordkeeping, as well as efficient fleet management. ELDs help reduce violations and eliminate the need for traditional paper logs.
  • Telematics: Data that is gathered using a combination of GPS technology, sensors, and onboard diagnostics, allowing fleet managers to track a vehicle’s health and location. Telematics can help with route optimization and asset protection to make the most use of your fleet.
  • Performance analytics tools: Data visualizations and personalized metrics that help measure a driver’s performance, manage fleets and equipment effectively, and spot safety patterns early.
“Safety tech has been a game changer. We’ve significantly reduced accidents and improved driver behavior across the fleet.”
Dennis Dellinger, President of Cargo Transporters

Why safety tech matters

Real-time safety data helps drivers and carriers identify and correct small issues before they turn into costly problems.

  • Fewer accidents: That means safer roads for everyone. Motive, a fleet management and driver safety platform, has seen in-cab safety tech reduce their users’ preventable accidents up to 80%, helping keep drivers safe, trucks on the road, and loads on schedule.
  • Reduced premiums and uninsured losses: Collisions are one of the biggest costs for carriers when you add up claims, litigation, and lost equipment. Motive safety tech has helped carriers reduce accident-related costs by up to 63%, based on a recent Motive customer survey. An improved safety reputation also helps carriers negotiate better insurance terms.
  • Safer drivers for longer retention: Drivers in a safer environment have a higher tendency to stay with carriers longer. When drivers feel unprotected or blamed, they leave — and replacing them is costly.
  • Video evidence for faster claims: Dual-facing dash cams can detect cell phone use, unsafe lane changes, red light and stop sign violations, and more. They also capture video of safety incidents or collisions.
  • Standardized practices: In-cab safety tech enables consistent safety programs, which are more predictable and scalable.
  • Industry standard: Shippers and brokers are rewarding safer fleets with better loads and rates.
