90-Second Garage is a series of short, expert-led informational videos featured in Amazon Relay’s Learning Center. They’re designed to provide information on safe driving techniques and basic truck maintenance to carriers looking for additional resources.
In this episode of 90-Second Garage, see how to safely change your semi truck windshield wipers.
Equipment to change your semi truck windshield wipers
When you change your semi truck’s windshield wipers, there will be a few tools you’ll need to assist you:
- Safety vest
- Closed-toed shoes
- Gloves
- Protective eyewear
And, of course, your replacement wipers. There are two types of mechanisms to secure your wipers to the arm: pin style and hook style. Look at your manufacturer recommendation for the proper sizes.
Steps to change your semi truck windshield wipers
- Lift the wipers away from the semi truck’s windshield.
- If wipers are hook style, release them by squeezing the tab on the arm and pulling the wiper away. To remove pin style arms, lift the locking tab, typically on top of the blade, and slice the blade off the pin.
- On your replacement wipers, make sure you remove the plastic covering protecting the blade prior to installing.
- To attach the new hook style arm, you’ll align the blade and hook, then slide it onto the arm until you hear a snap that indicates it’s locked up. To attach the new pin style arm, slide the new blade onto the pin and make sure the tabs are locked in place.
- Test the wiper by giving it a tug to ensure it’s secure.
- Repeat the steps on the other wiper.
