Trucking safety tips that support our communities

These trucking safety tips were presented at RelayCon 2024 as part of “Delivering for Our Communities: Empowering Community and Social Responsibility.”

Trucking safety directly impacts local residents and businesses, and Amazon Relay wants to work with carriers that have a “community as a customer” mindset. Safe operations not only benefit the community members that we interact with every day – it also leads to faster deliveries.

Here’s a few trucking safety tips for mindful driving year-round.

  1. Park smart: Only park your vehicle in areas designated and approved by the DOT’s guidance. Relay offers our carriers discounts on proper parking facilities. You can save money and avoid creating neighborhood disruptions such as access blockages, and unlawful damage to lawns, driveways, and other private property.
  2. Respect the route: Stick to truck-friendly routes (Relay navigation provides suggestions on the app). Taking shortcuts through residential areas increases noise, traffic, and safety risks for local residents. It can also cause cracked sidewalks, broken mailboxes, and damaged landscaping.
  3. Be alert: Always prioritize safety – not just for pedestrians, but also for your company’s drivers. Driving defensively, avoiding distractions, and scanning for potential hazards can all minimize the risk of accidents.
  4. Respect speed limits: Speeding not only puts safety at risk, but also contributes to noise and disruption. The FMCSA recommends reducing speed by a third on wet roads and by half or more on snow-packed roads.
  5. Inspect your vehicle: Keeping your vehicles well-maintained and up-to-date is important for the life and safety of equipment, and preventing accidents and malfunctions. Relay provides carriers with discounts to help proactively maintain a reliable fleet. We also require thorough equipment inspections before and after each trip to identify and resolve issues before returning to the road.
  6. Secure loads: Make sure all loads are properly secured to avoid shifting materials that could hinder equipment or create an unsafe driving environment.
