How to check your semi truck’s tire pressure

Videos are for informational purposes only. Always consult your truck’s manual and qualified professionals for maintenance and repairs.

90-Second Garage is a series of short, expert-led informational videos featured in Amazon Relay’s Learning Center. They’re designed to provide information on safe driving techniques and basic truck maintenance to carriers looking for additional resources.

In this episode of 90-Second Garage, see how to safely check your semi truck’s tire pressure.

Note: Tire pressure checks should be done first thing in the morning during the pre-trip inspection.

Equipment to check your semi truck’s tire pressure

When you check your semi truck’s tire pressure, there will be a few tools you’ll need to assist you:

  • Safety vest
  • Closed-toed shoes
  • Gloves
  • Protective eyewear
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Air pump

Steps to change your semi truck’s tire pressure

  1. Check the manufacturer label showing the recommended tire pressure on the inside of your semi cab door. Make sure you only fill to these front and rear recommendations.
  2. Once you know the tire pressure recommendation, remove the valve cap from the valve stem.
  3. With the cap removed, place the tire pressure gauge firmly on the valve stem. You should see the gauge blow out from the pressure.
  4. If the PSI on the pressure gauge’s reading is below the manufacturer’s recommendation, you’ll need to add air to the tire.
  5. If the tire needs air, attach the air pump on the valve stem.
  6. Once you’ve added air, double check the pressure reading with the tire pressure gauge. Repeat the same process as before to find the PSI.
  7. Once the tire is at the manufacturer’s recommended PSI, replace the valve stem cap back on and repeat this process for all tires.
