Best practices to prevent heat stress

  • Hydrate and eat a well-balanced breakfast.
  • Get 6-8 hours of sleep.
  • Dress in light-colored and breathable clothing.
  • Know your limits and personal risk factors.
  • Take cool-down breaks.
  • Learn the signs of symptoms of heat-related illness.

Signs and symptoms of heat-related illness

  • Heat rash: Tiny red blisters on the skin with a prickling sensation.
  • Heat cramps: Muscle cramps, heavy sweating, normal body temperature.
  • Heat exhaustion: Muscle cramps, irritability, vertigo, feeling of weakness, elevated body temperature (101-104 Fahrenheit), cool/pale/clammy skin, rapid/weak pulse, faint or dizzy, headache, heavy sweating, nausea or vomiting.
